How to set up high point scoring for a summer series

A summer series is meant to be fun, and rigid scoring can work against that. If every missed day counts as a big penalty, sailors who can't make it to the water every week fall out of contention early and lose interest. What high point scoring does

Instead of assigning low-is-good finishing places and treating a missed race as a heavy penalty, high point percentage scoring awards points based on how well a boat finishes relative to the fleet. A missed day still costs you, but far less than in a traditional low-point series, so casual competitors stay in the hunt through the whole summer. It's a good fit for club summer series, twilight racing, and any event where you'd rather keep people excited than optimize for maximum attendance.

Set up the overall series first

You start a series event like any other regatta — create a fleet racing event, add a fleet, and open it up. Because a summer series usually isn't a paid event, most organizers set it up as a free event. Once it's created, you configure the series settings, where you control:

• The scoring method (such as high point percentage)
• The day standing method for how each day's results roll up
• How many discards a sailor can drop
• A minimum percent of races a boat must complete to qualify for the standings

Add sub-series for each part of the season

Under the overall series, you can define sub-series — for example, one for each month or leg of the summer. Give each a date range and its own scoring settings. Scoring and publishing
